Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture? The kid began at age 9, and his mother thinks it is okay!

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I saw this on the Early Show this morning, and although it was before I'd had my first cup of coffee, it woke me up immediately!

This kid is gonna be a huge problem, because he is escalating, and maybe someday won't stop at just burglary.

Comments and opinions welcome - please observe CoH, but otherwise, have at it!

    Oh my gosh!

What a shame that this child did not get help when he was younger-- and they could have 'fixed' the problem, or at least, mitigated it.

Where was his mother? And why aren't they going after her, when she meets strangers with a shotgun?

    What a mess.

When I saw this story on TV this morning, that is the question I asked. It is clear how the kid became what he is, but why haven't the authorities charged the mother?

What I find even scarier, is he's become a cult-hero. They're selling T-Shirts with his name and picture on it, there's a Colton fan site on Facebook...

You really gotta wonder what on earth our society is coming to...

Thanks, sweet Dowser, for stopping by and adding your wisdom to the conversation.

OMG! Could this mother possibly be any more dys-social? No wonder the child is the way he is. I suspect that he should have been removed from her custody ages ago.

Sadly, there does seem to be an underbelly to society that both produces and encourages this sort of thing.

You're right. Too many parents see their offspring as extensions of themselves, and therefore can do no wrong. To admit that the offspring may be just plain rotten would be the same as admitting that they, themselves, are just plain rotten. So, what the delinquent kids do is okay, or it is everyone else's fault. But parents like this merely enable and encourage their spawn to be the worst that they can be. I wish I had the answers to the dilemma, but I guess that's for the experts to figure out...

          Thanks for your comment, Sydney!
